So, what the hell happened to the music that was meant to give South Africa a unique voice on the international scene? Kwaito was supposed to be "the next big thing" in SA music and yet it seems that the scene has regressed to a point of almost non-existence. The raw, and sometimes brutal truth once reflected through Kwaito has been replaced by a bling and glimmer reminiscent of a modern Hip Hop-esque, market-driven drivel.

A recent news article on MIO got me thinking about the current state of one of the few truly original forms of contemporary South African music, Kwaito. A few years ago, it seemed you couldn't turn on the radio or TV without being bombarded with images and sounds of then-superstar, Mandoza. I may have never been a fan of the music myself, but even I couldn't deny a certain sense of pride in the fact that a South African artist was grabbing such attention for himself with a brand of music that truly sounded South African.
